EMBRACE · EXPLORE · EXPRESSTHE PENTAPRISM PHILOSOPHYEMBRACE. EXPLORE. EXPRESS.
I've spent over two decades working professionally as a portrait photographer. Photography has given me a career, introduced me to remarkable people and taken me to places I might otherwise never have experienced.
But photography has always meant more to me than my profession.
It's how I experience the world. A reason to explore unfamiliar places, spend time with people, pay attention to everyday life and make photographs that mean something to me.
Through Pentaprism, I want to share that part of photography with others. Not just what I've learnt as a photographer, but what photography has allowed me to experience along the way.
I've created a collection of experiences, workshops and mentorships for people at different stages of their photography, from those who simply enjoy making photographs to those who hope to pursue it professionally.
Embrace it as something meaningful in your life, whether or not it ever becomes your profession. Photography doesn't always need a purpose or an outcome. Sometimes, the enjoyment of making photographs is reason enough.
Explore with it, and let photography introduce you to people, places and experiences you might otherwise have passed by. Take your camera somewhere unfamiliar, follow your curiosity and discover what happens along the way.
Express through it, and make photographs that reflect your interests, experiences and perspective. Over time, they become a personal record of the things that have mattered to you.
Whatever brings you to photography, I believe understanding creates freedom. Knowing why something works gives you the confidence to make your own decisions.
PENTAPRISM • EXPERIENCEPENTAPRISM SESSIONS
INSPIRATION • IDEAS • CONVERSATION
Come spend an evening looking at photographs and talking about photography.
I’ll share photographs, ideas and some of the things I’ve learnt from twenty years of making pictures. We’ll talk about what makes us stop and look, why some photographs work and others don’t, and perhaps discover a few different ways of seeing along the way.
No cameras. No technical lessons. Just photographs, conversation and people who enjoy photography.
2.5 HOURS · 6-12 PAX · $10-
A relaxed evening of photographs and conversation.
I’ll share photographs, stories and ideas from my own experience, and we’ll talk about what makes certain pictures interesting, why some stay with us and how photography can change the way we look at the world around us.
Each evening may be a little different. There may be a particular theme, photographs I would like to share or simply an interesting conversation that takes us somewhere unexpected.
This isn’t a class, so there is nothing to prepare and no camera required.
-
Anyone who enjoys photography.
You might be completely new to it, have been photographing for years, or simply enjoy looking at photographs and talking about them.
There is no particular level of experience required. Come curious.

EXPLORE SOMEWHERE • MAKE PHOTOGRAPHS
Grab a camera and come explore somewhere with us.
Photography on Foot is a small-group photographic walk through different parts of Singapore. We’ll wander, look for photographs and talk about the things we notice along the way.
There’s no particular genre of photography and nothing you’re expected to come back with. Just a few hours out with a camera, some good company and hopefully a few photographs you’re glad you made.
3 HOURS · SMALL GROUP · S$50-
We’ll meet at a selected location and spend the next few hours exploring it on foot with our cameras.
I’ll photograph alongside you, share what catches my attention and talk about some of the decisions I make along the way. We can look at each other’s photographs, exchange ideas and see how differently the same place can be photographed.
There are no assignments and no pressure to make anything extraordinary. Sometimes it’s simply good to go somewhere and photograph.

Anyone who enjoys going out and making photographs.
You should be comfortable using your own camera, but you don’t need to be an experienced photographer. Bring whatever you enjoy photographing with — a camera or even your phone.

PENTAPRISM • WORKSHOPART OF
PORTRAIT LIGHTING
UNDERSTANDING LIGHT . EXPLORING COLOUR
Portrait lighting is more than knowing where to place a light. It's understanding how light changes a face, creates dimension and influences the character of a photograph.
The Art of Portrait Lighting is a private, hands-on workshop exploring portraiture through continuous studio lighting.
Across two sessions, we'll begin with the fundamentals of light before introducing colour and creative lighting techniques using RGB lights.
You'll photograph two different guests, learning how to make lighting decisions, experiment with different approaches and adapt what you've learnt to the person in front of your camera.
2 SESSIONS · 3 HOURS EACH · PRIVATE 1-on-1 · S$900-
SESSION 01 · THE LANGUAGE OF LIGHT
Understanding how light shapes a portrait.
We'll explore the fundamentals of portrait lighting using continuous studio lights, learning how direction, softness, distance and contrast affect the appearance of a face.
You'll work with a guest of your own, experimenting with different lighting positions, modifiers and reflectors to create portraits ranging from soft and natural to more dramatic.
The emphasis is on understanding what changes when you move a light, and why.
SESSION 02 · THE EXPRESSION OF LIGHT
Exploring colour and creative portrait lighting.
Building on the first session, we'll introduce RGB lighting to explore how colour can influence the atmosphere and character of a portrait.
Using a combination of neutral and coloured lights, you'll experiment with background lighting, coloured highlights, rim lighting and different colour relationships.
You'll bring a second guest and apply what you've learnt to create a series of portraits with different lighting treatments.
The aim is to move beyond following lighting setups and begin making creative decisions of your own.
-
This workshop is for photography enthusiasts who want to explore studio portrait lighting and develop a better understanding of how to photograph people.
You should already be comfortable operating your camera and understand basic exposure. No previous studio lighting experience is required.
Whether you're interested in photographing friends and family or simply enjoy experimenting with portraiture, the programme offers a practical introduction to working with light.

PENTAPRISM • MENTORSHIPTHE PORTRAIT
MENTORSHIP
DEVELOP A PORTRAIT PRACTICE OF YOUR OWN
Knowing how to pose and compose a portrait is one thing. Working confidently with another person in front of your camera is another.
I've spent over two decades photographing people, developing and refining the methods I use to direct, compose and build a portrait session. I've also spent many years teaching these methods to other photographers.
The Portrait Mentorship is an opportunity to learn that process directly from me.
Across three private sessions, I'll share my approach to posing and composition, demonstrate how I work with my subjects and guide you through the routines I use in my own portrait sessions.
You'll photograph four different guests throughout the mentorship. I'll be there to observe how you work, review your photographs and make corrections as you practise. We'll look beyond the photographs themselves to understand the decisions, communication and direction that led to them.
The aim isn't to photograph like me. It's to give you a working foundation strong enough to develop a portrait practice of your own.
3 SESSIONS · 9 HOURS · PRIVATE 1-ON-1 · S$1,800-
SESSION 01 · THE FRAMEWORK
We’ll begin with my Head-to-Toe Posing Guide and the compositional framework I use when photographing portraits. We’ll look at how the body works, the adjustments I make and how I move between different portrait compositions.
SESSION 02 · THE ROUTINE
I’ll demonstrate how I work with a subject from beginning to end before you practise the process yourself. We’ll work through standing, seated and leaning positions, along with directing the body and hands, the language I use and how I build a portrait session one photograph at a time.
SESSION 03 · THE PRACTICE
You’ll bring two guests and photograph each of them in turn. With each person, you’ll begin by working through the routine before moving into free shooting.
After the first portrait, we’ll review what happened, make adjustments and apply what we learnt when you photograph your second guest.
-
The Portrait Mentorship is intended for photographers who want to develop a more structured and confident approach to photographing people.
Whether you're beginning to offer portrait sessions professionally or looking to refine an existing practice, the programme provides an opportunity to learn directly from my working methods and apply them under individual guidance.
You should already be comfortable operating your camera and understand the fundamentals of exposure. This mentorship focuses on posing, composition, subject direction and the practical routine of portrait photography rather than basic camera operation.
No previous professional portrait experience is required.
-
For photographers who would also like to learn how I manage and finish my professional portrait work, our Professional Post-Production workshop can be added as an optional private session.
We’ll go through my complete post-production process — from file management, naming, folder structure and backup to my Lightroom workflow and the Photoshop tools I use to finish portraits, including colour grading, Liquify, Frequency Separation and other commercial retouching techniques.

The emphasis is on developing a reliable working routine, understanding each adjustment and knowing when a portrait is finished.

YOU PHOTOGRAPH. I OBSERVE
Learning a routine is one thing. Making it your own takes practice.
The Portrait Practice is a series of private practice and review sessions available exclusively to graduates of The Portrait Mentorship.
Unlike the Mentorship, where I demonstrate and guide you through my methods, these sessions are led by you. You'll photograph your own guest while I observe how you work, from directing and communicating to posing and composing each portrait.
We'll review your photographs, identify what is working and make corrections while you're actually photographing. As your confidence and understanding develop, we can also use these sessions to work towards producing stronger photographs for your portfolio.
There's no new framework to learn. Just the opportunity to practise what you know, receive individual feedback and continue developing a portrait practice of your own.
