3-Day Portrait Masterclass

An advanced one-on-one mentoring programme designed for photographers who are serious about pursuing portrait photography professionally.

Across three personalised sessions, I will share the technical foundations, directing methods and creative frameworks that underpin my portrait work, helping you develop the confidence and consistency needed to work with real-world clients.

No, this isn't a workshop.

Unlike the classes I have conducted for Leica, Fujifilm and Canon, these private mentoring sessions are built entirely around you. They are designed to refine your existing abilities, eliminate inefficiencies and accelerate your development far beyond what a group setting allows.

We begin by analysing how you currently shoot, direct and think. From there, I tailor the mentorship around your goals, helping you build the skills, judgement and professional standards required to establish yourself as a portrait photographer.

    1. Individual Student Analysis
      (30 min evaluation) (15 min debrief)
      We begin by reviewing your portfolio, current shooting approach and photographic goals. This assessment allows me to identify the areas that will have the greatest impact on your development and tailor the mentorship accordingly.

    2. Posing Foundations
      (45 min analysis)
      Building upon the principles introduced in our Foundations programme, we'll explore the key considerations of posing from head to toe. Through a structured breakdown of posture, shape and body language, you'll learn how subtle adjustments can create stronger and more flattering portraits.

    3. Structured Composition Framework
      (60 min practical)
      Building upon the portrait structures introduced in our Foundations programme, we'll examine the five core portrait formats and discuss how framing, crop selection and visual emphasis influence the final image. The focus is on developing a more intentional approach to composition.

    4. Structured Posing System
      (30 min demo)
      A practical framework for directing people with confidence. From seated and leaning poses to standing portraits, you'll learn the principles behind creating natural, flattering and consistent portraits across different subjects and situations.

    1. Communication & Direction Mastery
      (30 min theory)
      A great portrait is rarely created through posing alone. Learn how to communicate with clarity, build trust quickly and guide subjects with confidence. We will explore the language of portrait photography, including how to give direction, shape body language and create an environment where genuine expressions emerge naturally.

    2. Complete Portrait Demonstration
      (30 min demo)
      Observe a complete portrait session from start to finish as I demonstrate my personal approach to working with clients. From the initial conversation and warm-up process to posing, refinement and expression coaching, you'll see how communication and technical execution come together to create portraits that feel natural, confident and authentic.

    3. Guided Student Practice
      (2 hours practical across 2 subjects)
      Theory becomes meaningful only through practice. Working with multiple subjects, you will apply the techniques covered throughout the session while receiving personalised feedback and coaching. This practical component is designed to strengthen your confidence, refine your communication skills and help you develop a more natural and effective approach to directing people in front of the camera.

      Bring together everything you've learned throughout the masterclass in a practical portrait session. Working with real subjects, you'll apply the principles of composition, posing, lighting and communication while demonstrating your ability to create purposeful and engaging portraits. This session is designed to reinforce your understanding, highlight areas for refinement and build confidence in your decision-making process.

    2. Critique & Development Roadmap
      (30 min per subject)
      We conclude with a detailed review of your routine, identifying both strengths and opportunities for growth. Based on your performance and individual goals, I will provide personalised feedback and a clear development roadmap, helping you focus on the skills and habits that will have the greatest impact on your photography moving forward.

Portrait Retouching Masterclass

A practical one-day workshop designed to help photographers develop a professional post-production workflow using Adobe Lightroom and Photoshop.

Across a structured editing process, I will share the workflow I use to manage, process and refine portrait assignments from capture to delivery. You'll learn how to organise files, select images, develop consistent colour and tone, and apply natural retouching techniques that elevate the final photograph while preserving authenticity and character.

This isn't a class about how to create the most extreme retouching results.

Instead, the focus is on building an efficient and repeatable workflow that allows photographers to produce polished, professional results consistently. By understanding both the technical process and the creative decisions behind post-production, you'll develop a system that supports long-term growth as a working portrait photographer.

  • A strong editing process begins long before Lightroom or Photoshop. We begin by examining the workflow I use to manage portrait assignments from capture to delivery, including file organisation, backup strategies and project management. By establishing a reliable system, you'll spend less time searching for files and more time focusing on creating great work.

  • Learn the approach I use to process and refine portrait sessions efficiently. We will cover image selection, file handling and the Lightroom tools that contribute most to a polished final result. You'll gain a deeper understanding of colour, tone and consistency while learning how to develop a workflow that suits your personal style. We will also explore colour grading techniques and the creation of custom presets to streamline future editing.

  • Discover the retouching techniques I use to elevate portraits while preserving authenticity and character. We will discuss skin refinement, distraction removal, tonal balancing and facial enhancement, while exploring the subtle decisions that separate natural retouching from over-editing. The focus is on developing a practical and repeatable approach that enhances your work without compromising the integrity of the portrait.

Portrait Lighting
Masterclass

Learn how to confidently create professional portraits using simple and effective studio lighting setups.

Designed for photographers who want to move beyond guesswork, this workshop focuses on understanding light rather than memorising diagrams. Through a practical and hands-on approach, participants will learn the same lighting principles Ejun uses to create his signature portrait style.

By understanding how light behaves and how subtle adjustments affect a portrait, photographers will gain the confidence to create consistent and repeatable results for client work.

Through demonstrations and practical examples, you'll learn how light quality, direction, distance and contrast influence the final image. By understanding concepts such as light falloff and exposure control, you'll gain the confidence to make intentional lighting decisions rather than relying on trial and error.

  • (60 min practical)
    Learn the practical lighting approach I use to create professional portraits for clients. We will explore how simple one and two-light setups can be adapted to create a variety of portrait styles, while discussing lighting patterns, modifier selection and subject separation. The focus is not on memorising setups, but understanding the principles behind them so they can be applied confidently in different situations.

  • (60 min practical)
    Photography is best learned through doing. Throughout the practical session, you'll apply the concepts covered earlier while experimenting with different lighting arrangements and portrait styles. With personalised guidance and feedback, you'll develop a stronger understanding of how to shape light, solve problems and build lighting setups that are both effective and repeatable for real client work.

ACADEMY PHILOSOPHY

Why we exist

Many photographers begin their journey by learning the technical aspects of photography.

They learn about cameras, lenses, lighting and editing. They spend countless hours refining their craft, studying tutorials and practising their technique.

Yet when it comes time to work with real clients, many discover that technical skill is only one part of the profession.

Photography is ultimately a people business.

Success depends on communication, trust, confidence, client experience, marketing, branding and the ability to create meaningful connections with the people in front of the camera.

Pentaprism Academy was created to bridge that gap.

FOUNDER'S VISION

Founded by portrait photographer and educator Ejun Low, the Academy combines real-world photography experience with practical business and industry knowledge. Drawing from nearly two decades of professional experience, Ejun has photographed leaders, entrepreneurs, healthcare professionals and families, while also serving as an educator and instructor for leading photographic brands.

Alongside photography training, the Academy places equal emphasis on the skills required to build a sustainable creative career. This perspective is led by Pentaprism's Business Director, Shaan Ng, whose professional background spans brand strategy, marketing and leadership development. Having spent years working with organisations, professionals and business leaders, she brings a strategic perspective to positioning, communication, client relationships and long-term business growth.

The Academy is also shaped by a broader commitment to the photographic profession. As Vice President of the Professional Photographers Association Singapore, Ejun regularly engages with photographers at different stages of their careers and remains actively involved in strengthening the industry through education, mentorship and community building.
